Kickstarting the Next Phase with our SPORTS TECH TOKYO Finalists

The center of attention is not the tech experience, it is the fan experience that we can create with tech.

– Daniel Brusilocsky, Digital Initiatives Lead, Golden State Warriors

Once our 12 finalists were chosen from hundreds of startups within the cohort, we invited them to come to our San Francisco office, along with partners, advisors, the Dentsu team and mentors, to get to know each other as we launch into the next phase of SPORTS TECH TOKYO: the 3 month intensive mentoring phase — leading up to the inaugural World Demo Day at Oracle Park, home of the San Francisco Giants, in August. There, we’ll see the fruition of months of work.

The group had the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes with STT mentor Steve Tseng at the Pac12 Studios and learn about what it takes to run a college network – from a technology infrastructure standpoint to the production and commentary on game days. Needless to say, the quality of information shared in that room was a mere representation of how far the sports tech industry has evolved in the last couple of years

They also toured the Chase Center Experience, where another STT mentor, Daniel Brusilovsky, gave a sneak peek into the upcoming arena for the Golden State Warriors. Daniel shared the importance of technology and innovation in driving the next generation of fans in-venue as well as engaging them beyond the game day experience.

Once back at the Scrum Ventures office, we hosted panel sessions with the mentors to discuss trends in the sports tech industry, including topics such as:

  • Digital Innovation Session
    • The importance of content curation and challenges of monetizing such curation; panelists included:
  • Lunch & Learn
    • Stanford University Tsuyoshi Kawata (Assistant Football Coach – Stanford University) on leveraging technology on the field
  • Rights-Holder Session
    • The challenges of tech and working with startups that require good timing and execution; panelists included:
  • Growth Session
    • How capital is transforming the industry; panelists included:
  • Japanese Market Expansion (Case Study)
    • Why Japan is an exciting market for many sports tech companies
      • Sezin Aksoy (Senior Vice President, Global Data Strategy and Analytics at AXS/AEG)
  • Entrepreneur Perspective
    • A Founder’s Journey
  • Media Landscape Overview
    • Demystifying the current media landscape
      • David Wertheimer (President, Digital Products at FOX, Strategic Business & Technology Leader at FOX)
  • STT Partner / Dentsu Session

The last session — a panel with DENTSU INC. and our partners discussed sports tech business opportunities in Japan. The content emphasized the importance of international brands investing in Japan and how this could spur sports tech growth throughout APAC.

Over the 3 day Finalist Kickoff, attendees shared insights, ideas, and discussed potential ways to work together. As SPORTS TECH TOKYO is about building a community and connecting world-class technologies with a market that will be hosting some of the highest profile sports content in the next 15 months (and beyond), this was a great start to the next phase of the program. Much more to come as we count-down to World Demo Day in August!
